DocuSign alternatives for freelancers: what the cheapest plans cost

By the nodshake team. Published 14 October 2026, updated 14 October 2026.

Of the 9 vendors we compared, 4 have a free plan that covers a freelancer sending 5 documents a month, and 1 covers 20 a month. For 20 a month the cheapest paid plans are SignWell Light and Zoho Sign Standard at $10 a month on yearly billing. Free plans have monthly limits, so check yours.

Key points

  • Most freelancers sending a few documents a month do not need a paid plan.
  • Free plans cap documents per month, per user or per team, and the caps differ a lot.
  • Prices are for one user on yearly billing paid upfront; monthly billing costs more.
  • Some vendors are left out of the numbers because their pages conflict or show no US dollar price.

What to check before you choose

  • Whether the limit counts documents, signers or invites. Some vendors count each signer.
  • Whether the free plan is per user or shared by a team.
  • Whether yearly billing is paid upfront or monthly. The cheaper price is usually the upfront one.
  • What happens above the limit, which several vendors do not publish.

Use the cost calculator for your own volume and number of people. It shows a source for every price, and this guide shows how to work out DocuSign's real cost per envelope.

Questions

What is the cheapest e-signature tool for a freelancer?
For 5 documents a month, 4 of the 9 vendors we compared have a free plan that covers it. For 20 a month, 1 do.
Is there a free alternative to DocuSign?
Yes. BoldSign (25 envelopes a month), Zoho Sign (5 a month), PandaDoc (5 a month), Documenso (5 documents a month), Dropbox Sign (3 requests a month) and SignWell (3 documents a month) all have free plans.
Why are some vendors missing?
signNow's plan names and limits conflict across its own pages, and Foxit's page did not show a US dollar price, so we did not publish numbers for them.
