Adobe Sign alternative: when paying per signed document costs less
By the nodshake team. Published 16 October 2026, updated 16 October 2026.
An Adobe Sign alternative is worth a look if you send a few documents a month and do not edit PDFs. Acrobat Standard costs $14.99 a month on a yearly plan, with no e-sign cap on Adobe's table. Acrobat Sign licenses include 150 transactions per user a year. Below about 33 documents a month, $0.45 per signed document costs less.
Key points
- Adobe's limits table lists Acrobat Standard and Pro (except ETLA) as "Unlimited" transactions per user a year, and Acrobat Sign plans at 150. Both carry a "(See below)" mark.
- A transaction is counted when a document is sent, signed or not.
- Yearly plans billed monthly charge a fee of up to half the remaining commitment if you cancel after 14 days.
- Break-even against $0.45 a document: about 33 documents a month for Acrobat Standard on a yearly plan, about 55 on month-to-month billing.
Adobe Sign alternative: first check which Adobe plan you have
nodshake is our product and competes with Adobe. Every Adobe figure here comes from Adobe's own pricing, trial and help pages, linked below with the date we read them. What this page adds: Adobe's prices, transaction limits and cancel terms in one place, and the monthly volume at which each Adobe plan costs less or more than paying per signed document.
"Adobe Sign" is two different things, and the right alternative depends on which one you pay for:
- Acrobat Standard, Pro or Studio. The PDF app, bought per person or per team license on Adobe's pricing page. It edits, converts and fills PDFs, and it can send documents for e-signature.[1]
- Acrobat Sign plans (Small Business, for Business, for Enterprise). Sold to companies, often on a contract. Adobe's pricing page lists no Acrobat Sign plan; for business plans it says "Contact us for more information about plans and pricing for businesses of all sizes."[1]
If you are looking for an Acrobat Sign alternative because a company contract is up for renewal, your contract sets your limits. If you pay for Acrobat yourself, the tables below apply.

Adobe transaction limits: 150 a year, or unlimited
Adobe's help page "Understand transaction limits" sets the sending cap by plan:[2]
| Plan (Adobe's wording) | Transactions per user license per year | Signers per transaction |
|---|---|---|
| Acrobat Standard (except ETLA) | Unlimited (See below) | 10 |
| Acrobat Pro (except ETLA) | Unlimited (See below) | 25 |
| Acrobat Sign SMB (Small Business) | 150 (See below) | 25 |
| Acrobat Sign for Business (ETLA and VIP) | 150 (See below) | 25 |
| Acrobat Sign for Enterprise (ETLA and VIP) | 150 (See below) | 25 |
Adobe defines the unit this way: "A transaction occurs each time an electronic document or collection of related electronic documents is sent to one or more End Users through Acrobat Sign." And: "Acrobat Sign plans sold as user licenses include 150 transactions per user per year unless otherwise stipulated in your contract."[2] So a transaction is used when you send, whether or not anyone signs.
Three things the page does not settle. The text behind "(See below)" for Standard and Pro is not shown next to the table. The team plans on the pricing page are not named in the table, so whether Acrobat Standard for teams counts as "Acrobat Standard" is not stated. And the page does not say whether unused transactions carry over to the next year. Adobe's live help page returned HTTP 403 to our reader on 16 October 2026; we read Adobe's own page from the Internet Archive copy of 9 October 2026, which shows "Last updated on Mar 11, 2025".[2]
Adobe Sign free trial, and is there a free version?
Adobe's Acrobat trial page says "Work smarter with a 7-day free trial" and "No payment is required until the 7-day trial period ends." After that, "your Adobe Acrobat subscription automatically converts to a paid plan at the rate shown at sign up", with an email reminder before the trial ends.[3] For teams, the pricing page offers "Up to 10 licenses with free trial".[1]
There is no free Acrobat plan that sends documents for signature on Adobe's pricing page.[1] So "Adobe Sign free" in practice means the 7-day trial. If what you want is an Adobe signature free of charge for your own documents, you do not need Acrobat at all: draw or type your signature in our free signature maker, download a transparent PNG and place it with a free PDF tool (see how to sign a PDF electronically).
Cancel fees on Adobe yearly plans
From Adobe's pricing page, read 16 October 2026:[1]
- Yearly, billed monthly (individual): "Fee applies up to half your remaining annual commitment if you cancel after 14 days."
- Yearly, prepaid: "No refund if you cancel after 14 days."
- Month to month: "Cancel anytime, no fee."
This is the cost occasional senders tend to miss. If you sign up for Acrobat Standard at $14.99 a month for one contract and cancel in month 3, the fee can be up to half of the 9 remaining payments, about $67.46.
What an occasional sender pays: Adobe vs per document
One sender, per month. Adobe at list price for one person;[1] nodshake at its published pay-as-you-go price, $0.45 per signed document with no monthly fee, for every document.[4] The nodshake Free plan covers 3 signed documents a month.
Scroll sideways to see all columns
| Documents a month | Acrobat Standard, yearly plan | Acrobat Standard, month to month | nodshake at $0.45 each |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | $14.99 | $24.99 | $2.25 |
| 20 | $14.99 | $24.99 | $9 |
| 33 | $14.99 | $24.99 | $14.85 |
| 40 | $14.99 | $24.99 | $18 |
| 60 | $14.99 | $24.99 | $27 |
- Acrobat Standard, yearly: $14.99 / $0.45 = about 33 documents a month.
- Acrobat Standard, month to month: $24.99 / $0.45 = about 55.
- Acrobat Pro, yearly: $19.99 / $0.45 = about 44.
- Acrobat Standard for teams: $16.99 / $0.45 = about 37 per license.
Below those volumes, paying per signed document costs less. Above them, Acrobat costs less per document, and it also edits PDFs. For other vendors at your volume, use the e-signature cost calculator.
Adobe Sign vs DocuSign on price
For one sender on yearly billing: Acrobat Standard is $14.99 a month with no cap on Adobe's table and up to 10 signers per transaction.[1][2] DocuSign Personal is $10 a month for 5 envelopes a month, and DocuSign Standard is $25 per user a month for 100 envelopes per user a year (prices read for our cost calculator 13 October 2026).[5]
So at 5 or fewer a month DocuSign Personal costs less than Acrobat Standard; above 5 a month a single sender pays less on Acrobat Standard than on DocuSign Standard, on list prices. Both count a send, not a signature. Our guide to DocuSign pricing has DocuSign's overage rates, and can you use DocuSign for free covers its free account and trial.
Adobe Sign for business: teams and Acrobat Sign plans
For a team, Acrobat Standard for teams is $16.99 per license a month and Pro for teams $23.99, billed yearly.[1] Acrobat Sign for Business and for Enterprise are quoted by Adobe's sales team. Adobe's limits page says companies with high volume "can speak to their sales agent about buying a total volume of transactions with unlimited users (or a site license)".[2]
If your company is moving off Adobe, nodshake's Business / API plan is priced per signed document with volume agreed in writing, and the CodesSavvy team quotes setup and migration per project. For choosing a provider as a company, see the company e-signature checklist.
Adobe Sign alternatives by need

When to keep Adobe Acrobat (when nodshake is not the better choice)
- You edit, combine or fill PDFs every week. nodshake only collects signatures. If you pay for Acrobat for PDF work, e-sign sending comes with it, unlimited on Adobe's table.[2]
- You send more than about 33 documents a month. Acrobat Standard on a yearly plan then costs less per document than $0.45 each.
- You send more than about 22 a month and do not need PDF editing. A flat $10 a month unlimited plan costs less than nodshake: $120 / $0.45 = 266 documents a year.[8]
- Your company has an Adobe enterprise agreement. Single sign-on, admin and contract terms may matter more than the price per document.
- You need sign-up today. nodshake access is set up personally after a request, usually within a day or two.
Where nodshake fits: you send a handful of documents in some months and none in others, you do not want a yearly commitment with a cancel fee, and you want to pay for documents that get signed. The free plan covers 3 signed documents a month, pay as you go is $0.45 per signed document with no monthly fee, and Business / API starts from $0.30 per signed document with volume pricing agreed in writing. See nodshake pricing.[4]
Questions
- Does Adobe Acrobat Pro limit e-signatures?
- Adobe's transaction limits table lists Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro (except ETLA agreements) as unlimited transactions per user license per year, marked "See below". Pro allows up to 25 signers per transaction and Standard 10.
- Is there a free version of Adobe Sign?
- Adobe's pricing page lists no free plan that sends documents for signature. Acrobat has a 7-day free trial that converts to a paid plan unless you cancel. To make a signature image for your own documents, a free signature maker is enough.
- How long is the Adobe Sign free trial?
- Adobe's Acrobat trial page says 7 days, with no payment until the trial ends and an automatic switch to a paid plan after it. Team plans offer up to 10 licenses on the trial.
- Which is cheaper, Adobe Sign or DocuSign?
- For one sender on yearly billing, DocuSign Personal at $10 a month is lower for up to 5 envelopes a month. Above that, Acrobat Standard at $14.99 a month costs less than DocuSign Standard at $25, on list prices.
- Do unused Adobe Sign transactions roll over?
- Adobe's transaction limits page does not say. It states the allowance as transactions per user license per year, and says your contract can set other terms.
