Can you use DocuSign for free? The free account, trial and limits
By the nodshake team. Published 16 October 2026, updated 16 October 2026.
You can use DocuSign for free to sign anything someone sends you, but sending for signature is the paid part. A free account sends about 3 envelopes in total. The 30-day free trial sends from a limited pool. Demo and developer accounts are free too, but DocuSign says documents sent from them are not legally binding.
Key points
- Signing what others send you is free and does not expire. DocuSign: "Signing documents with Docusign eSignature is always free."
- The free account sends "commonly up to 3 envelopes total", according to DocuSign Support. That is 3 in total, not 3 a month.
- The trial page says "30 days free"; DocuSign Support says the trial "usually lasts about 14 days".
- The lowest paid plan is Personal: $10 a month paid yearly, for 5 envelopes a month.
DocuSign for free: the four free accounts compared
nodshake is our product and competes with DocuSign. Every DocuSign figure on this page comes from DocuSign's own pages, linked below with the date we read them. What this page adds: DocuSign's four free options side by side, and the places where DocuSign's own pages disagree with each other.

| Free account | Who it is for | Can it send for signature? | Legally valid? | Does it expire? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free account | People who sign and store documents | "Commonly up to 3 envelopes total"[3] | Yes, it is a normal account | No: "A free signer account lasts forever"[1] |
| Free trial | Trying Business Pro features before you buy | Yes, from "a limited envelope pool"[3] | DocuSign flags only demo and developer accounts as not binding[5] | Yes: 30 days on the trial page, "about 14 days" in Support[2][3] |
| Demo account | Non-developers testing features | Test sends only | No: "invalid as a legally binding contract"[5] | Not stated |
| Developer account | Developers creating an integration | Test sends only | No: "not valid for legal purposes"[6] | No: developer accounts "don't expire"[6] |
Only the first two can send a document that counts. Demo and developer accounts run on a separate test server.[5]
The DocuSign free account: what you can send
The free account is for signing and storing documents, for one user: upload a Word or PDF file, choose "I'm the only signer", sign and send it back.[1][3] It is also the DocuSign free version most people mean: "Signing documents with Docusign eSignature is always free."[1]
Sending for others to sign is where it stops. DocuSign Support, page dated 13 October 2026: "Light sending, commonly up to 3 envelopes total". And: "If you exceed the free limit, you see 'limit reached' and need to upgrade."[3] Because it is a total, waiting does not reset it.
DocuSign's allowance FAQ says documents "you sign yourself through Sign a Document do not count", and nor do drafts.[4] That FAQ is written for paid plans and does not say whether it applies to the free account's 3.
The DocuSign free trial: 30 days, or about 14?
The trial gives you "many of the features of Docusign eSignature Business Pro".[5] DocuSign's own pages do not agree on how long it lasts:
| DocuSign page | Page date | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Free trial sign-up page[2] | Read 16 October 2026 | "30 days free" and "No obligation, no credit card required" |
| Support: Docusign Plans and Limits[3] | 13 October 2026 | "Short-term access to many Business Pro features with a limited envelope pool". "Usually lasts about 14 days without a credit card." |
| Blog: free trial FAQs[5] | 18 January 2024 | "No credit card is required to sign up. This way, you won't be charged if you forget to cancel" |
So plan your test for 14 days, not 30, and treat the envelope pool as small: none of these pages gives a number.
What happens when the DocuSign free trial ends
Nothing is charged, because no card was taken. DocuSign Support: "When the trial ends, the account usually becomes Free unless you select a paid plan."[3] So after the DocuSign free 30 day trial you are back on the free account, with an upgrade button in the corner.[5]
Is there a DocuSign free plan or free tier for sending?
No. There is no DocuSign free tier that sends every month; every such plan is paid. The lowest is Personal:
- $10 a month paid yearly upfront ($120 a year), or $15 month to month, read 15 October 2026.[7]
- $11 a month on "Annual | Billed monthly", the page's default view, which DocuSign states is "an annual commitment of $132", read 16 October 2026.[7]
- "Send 5 envelopes per month", 1 user.[7]

If free DocuSign is not enough
Other tools have free plans that renew every month. Three examples:

When nodshake is not the better choice
- You only sign what others send you. DocuSign is already free for that, and you need nothing else.
- You send up to 25 a month on your own. BoldSign's free plan covers 25 envelopes a month for one user at $0, read 15 October 2026.[8] nodshake's free plan covers 3 signed documents a month.[10]
- You send more than about 22 paid documents a month, every month. A flat $10 a month unlimited plan, such as SignWell Light on yearly billing ($120 a year), costs less: $120 / $0.45 = 266 documents a year.[11]
- Your clients or your company require DocuSign. Then the choice is made for you.
- You need sign-up in minutes. nodshake access is set up personally after a request, usually within a day or two.
Against DocuSign Personal on yearly billing ($120 a year for up to 60 envelopes), 60 documents a year on nodshake pay as you go cost $27 at $0.45 each.[7][10] nodshake charges per signed document; DocuSign counts an envelope when it is sent.[4] See nodshake pricing.
Questions
- Can you use DocuSign for free?
- Yes, to sign documents other people send you, with no time limit. Sending is limited: a free account sends about 3 envelopes in total, and the free trial sends from a limited pool for 30 days according to the trial page, or about 14 according to DocuSign Support.
- Does DocuSign have a free version?
- For signing, yes. DocuSign says signing is always free. There is no free plan that keeps sending documents for others to sign each month; the lowest paid plan is Personal.
- How long is the DocuSign free trial?
- DocuSign's trial page says 30 days free. DocuSign's Support page Plans and Limits, dated 13 October 2026, says the trial usually lasts about 14 days. Plan for the shorter one.
- Does the DocuSign free trial need a credit card?
- No. The trial page says no credit card is required, and DocuSign's blog says you will not be charged if you forget to cancel. When the trial ends the account usually becomes a free account.
- Are documents sent from a DocuSign demo or developer account legally valid?
- No. DocuSign says documents sent from a demo account are invalid as a legally binding contract, and envelopes sent from a developer account are not valid for legal purposes. Use the free account or the trial for real documents.
